Why Extracurricular
Activities Matter

Extracurricular Activities
By Natalie Guzman

When you start your freshman year at high school, teachers and faculty typically tell you to join clubs and sports. They want you to be involved, meet new people, and explore new options. They also mention college and how joining these groups is a plus, it makes you noticeable when submitting your applications.

I remember my freshman year, I thought “why do I need to join? I already have school work.” So I didn’t join, I had Choir which is a class and I felt that was enough. Honestly, I was scared of meeting new people and stepping out of my comfort zone. However, I’ve come to realize that those teachers and other faculty were right. My sophomore year I wasn’t as scared, and in fact I remember sitting in my advisory and hearing about the Badminton team. Lucky for me enough the coach was my Spanish teacher. I was very nervous and anxious to ask him, but I did and now it’s my second year on the team and I’m on varsity. I'm also one of the captains on the team.

It’s crazy to me how I got here, I even got more involved in my choir and joined the Choir Council, a leadership group within the program. Heck I’m even writing this article because I had the courage to join Newspaper. I’m nervous right now writing this, but I’m once again stepping out of my comfort zone.

I’m writing this now to tell you,

So step out, get out there and really soak in what you have left of highschool. This is my last year, and I’m just trying to enjoy it before I go. You should go try something new, and if you are in an extracurricular activity, enjoy it. Trust me, high school really does go as fast as they say.

I love joining new clubs and activities and branching out.

Credentials: I'm qualified to write this piece because I'm in 2 clubs: Choir Council & Newspaper. I'm also on the badminton team.
